9/23/2024 - Comprehensive Balance Update

Hey all! This is mostly a housekeeping update based on feedback from players and a little more experience while playing it. I also took the opportunity to clean up some things that bugged me, and add some things to make the game feel more cohesive. Lastly, I also added black-and-white versions of every pdf for print! Here's the list of all changes made:

Core Rules (including every suppliment):

  • Removed critical strikes.  It felt like this system clashed with the exploding dice, and didn't offer anything meaningful to play, so I replaced it with...
  • Added degrees of success. Instead of a simple pass/fail, now there is a partial success if a roll matches the target number. Getting a partial success still achieves your goal, but also adds a new wrinkle to the mix.
  • Changed the cost of re-rolling dice to 1 XP instead of 2. My players weren't engaging with this system because they felt it was two high of a cost, so bumping it down to 1 XP ended up feeling better for the players.
  • Updated colors. Now the core rules come in a nice blue tone for the text boxes!

GM Guide:

  • Fixed some errors and updated some wording for the Gear and Magic Item Generator.
  • Added a random location generator for making nations, cities, and dungeons on the fly!
  • Removed the Lingering Injuries and Taming Beasts optional rules.
  • Added the Classic Fantasy optional rule as a way to turn Viator more D&D-like!
  • Added the Disease optional rule, for tracking sickness.
  • Added the Harsh Injuries optional rule, for tougher games where getting hit really matters. This replaced the Lingering Injuries rule.
  • Added the Synergizing Traits optional rule, for Traits that just work well together. This rule should allow for some interesting characters with higher power ceilings. This rule absorbed some of the Trait Splitting optional rule.
  • Edited the Pets optional rule to include the rules for Taming Beasts.
  • Updated colors. Now the GM Guide comes in a nice blue tone for the text boxes!

Starbound:

  • Moved the core rules to the end of the document. This is a request that I got pretty often while getting local feedback, and it fits more with the guides of other games this way.
  • Small formatting and grammatical updates. The goal is to make the formatting uniform across all documents, when it previously wasn't.
  • Clarified that ships cannot be stolen, as this breaks the game.
  • Added a Friends and Foes list of interesting people to meet across the solar system!

Bordeaux, Shining Seas, Steel March, Mongolian Plains, Spheres of Terra:

  • Moved the core rules to the end of the document.
  • Small formatting and grammatical updates.

Other:

  • Added printer-friendly pdfs of every document, found in the Viator-BW-1.1.zip file.
  • Added new screenshots to the itch page.

I know this isn't the most exciting update, but it's still one that I thought was important. There should be a new suppliment coming in a few weeks called Norrvei, and it's going to be based in a brand new world! I'm excited to get that one out to you, it's got some interesting character options that I really enjoy. Stay tuned for more, thanks for reading!
