1/16/2025 - The Labyrinth launch
Happy new year everyone!
This release is one that's close to my heart. Mechanically and page-wise, it's a small one, but it dives into the lore behind all of the Viator suppliments that have or will ever release. This is the most important release to me since the initial launch, so if you want to know why, let me tell you a story...
Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to be a writer. I wanted to make something like Harry Potter or Percy Jackson, something that kids can enjoy and adults can read back on with fondness. I always wanted to explore a multiverse, but the exact form that it took changed many times throughout the years, until my ideas slowly solidified into the seven worlds mentioned in the Labyrinth. These dimensions became a sort of escape for me, and I spent years exploring these worlds and cities and characters in my head.
Once I actually tried writing stories, however, it just didn't work for me. I knew it wouldn't be easy, and I was fully prepared to practice and get better, but the ideas wouldn't come when I sat down at the keyboard. Perhaps most importantly, it just wasn't fun.
Around the same time that I was coming to the realization that I probably would never write a book, I started looking into TTRPGs outside of Dungeons and Dragons. There is a whole world of systems and rules out there, and so many of them are so interesting! I started thinking about what my perfect game would be, and putting different rules together, and eventually I cobbled together something close to the released Core Rules and GM Guide. The rules alone were good, but if I wanted to release this, it needed more - and then it hit me.
I may not enjoy writing stories, but I definitely enjoyed worldbuilding - coming up with interesting scenarios and cities and power systems is the best part. That's what I've done for most of my life, and now I had an outlet. I had a way to put all of my worldbuilding out into the public, just like I wanted to do since I was a kid. The creativity and passion hasn't stopped since I started this 8 months ago: there's eight (plus one joke) settings that are already written down, and I have close to two dozen ideas for new suppliments in my phone that I'm slowly building upon and adding to.
Making these suppliments is fulfilling a dream that I've had since I was a child, and I have no intention of stopping any time soon. If you're reading this and enjoying the games, thank you. Every single download means the world to me, and I hope that you can continue having fun in my silly little worlds. Thank you.
Now back to the actual release:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Labyrinth, the newest suppliment, is both a game and a lore dump. On the rules side, the Labyrinth contains multiple ways to create diverse dungeons, filled with enemies, traps, and loot. On the story side, the Labyrinth ties together all other Viator releases and provides a lore-friendly way to bring existing characters between all different suppliments - and any other setting you want!
The Labyrinth contain:
- Information about the Labyrinth, the ever shifting maze that sits right behind our reality and connects it with every other possible world,
- Simple yet classic character options for a nostalgic experience,
- Two methods for generating dungeons, and robust tables for filling out rooms and encounters,
- Elegant formats for creating puzzles and traps, along with advice on making them fun and interesting,
- Example monsters, puzzles, and traps, meant to inspire creativity,
- Random tables for creating magic items with various power levels,
- And rules for moving characters between dimensions / suppliments / settings as a Traveler (which is where the name of the game came from!)!
